The Barcelona City Council, through BIMSA, has opened to the public this April the gardens dedicated to photographer Margaret Michaelis in the Vallcarca i Penitents neighborhood, in Gràcia. RUBAU has been the company in charge of the urbanization works of this new green space for the city.
The project, with an investment of €2 million, began at the end of 2022 and was completed by mid-March of this year. This new green space features 2000 meters of resting and children’s play areas where slides, seating, and integrated stairs have been installed, connecting with internal routes that link different levels to take advantage of the two-meter slope of the terrain. Additionally, the gardens have improved connectivity between Anna Piferrer, Otília Castellví, and Cesare Cantú streets, with new pathways and access ramps.
The project has incorporated the demands from the participatory process involving over 300 neighborhood residents, where the uses of the new public space were defined with the intention of promoting an educational and participatory experience. The commitment to green areas will be reflected when current drought restrictions are lifted, allowing the completion of a lush vegetation zone with areas of aromatic plants.
Below, we share the photographic report of the project:
