The project, promoted by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA), strengthens the reliability of the three water distribution networks supplied by the wells located around Peralada.
AREMA has completed the drinking water supply reinforcement works for the three distribution networks supplied by the wells in the Peralada area. The project, promoted by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA), was awarded to Construcciones Rubau, with the works carried out by AREMA, Grupo Rubau’s company specialising in integrated water cycle solutions.
The works included the construction of five new abstraction wells, nearly four kilometres of pressurised pipelines, a water storage and treatment tank, and a pumping and distribution station. The project enables the use of a second aquifer that had not previously been exploited, incorporating new water resources without affecting the existing operational wells.
For many years, the existing wells have provided additional water resources to the surrounding municipalities, complementing the supply from the Darnius reservoir. However, the drought periods experienced between 2022 and 2025 highlighted the need for infrastructure capable of guaranteeing water supply during periods of severe water scarcity.
The new infrastructure can independently supply approximately 80% of the demand of the three distribution networks. Working together with the existing system, it ensures water availability even during extreme drought conditions. The five wells, with depths ranging from 17 to 24 metres, can operate either independently or simultaneously depending on groundwater levels and drinking water demand.
The project also includes a 450 m³ prefabricated concrete storage tank designed to ensure the proper drinking water treatment process before distribution, together with a control building housing the chlorination, pumping and management systems for the three distribution networks. The entire facility is connected to the operator’s SCADA system, allowing remote monitoring and operation.
With the completion of this project, AREMA continues to develop hydraulic infrastructure that promotes the efficient and sustainable use of water resources, helping to strengthen water supply security and improve the resilience of water systems in the face of increasing demand and prolonged drought.
