COMPLETION OF THE JACA–CANFRANC RAILWAY UPGRADE

July, 2025

A strategic project driven by ADIF that modernizes the Zaragoza–Canfranc railway line and strengthens cross-border rail connectivity.

Rubau, in a joint venture with Cycasa, Trade, and Acsa, has completed the track renewal works between Jaca and Canfranc, a strategic 24 km section of the Zaragoza–Canfranc line promoted by ADIF. This project is part of an ambitious plan to modernize the railway infrastructure in the Aragonese Pyrenees, key to the future reopening of the international connection with France through the Somport tunnel.

With an investment of approximately €25.6 million, partially funded by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), the works were carried out between 2022 and 2025.

The main actions included:

  • Complete track renewal, replacing over 24 km of rail and 8 railway switches.
  • Improvement of the alignment and embankments, including the stabilization and drainage of cuttings and structural replacement.
  • Full rehabilitation of 19 tunnels and treatment of metal bridges.
  • Implementation of drainage systems, rockfall protection, and new ditches.
  • Upgrades to stations and platforms, including accessibility improvements.

Thanks to this intervention, the line will reach speeds of up to 80 km/h and will allow mixed traffic (passenger and freight) to operate with greater safety, reliability, and efficiency.

This project posed a major technical and logistical challenge due to the characteristics of the environment, and it would not have been possible without the dedication, professionalism, and commitment of all the teams involved in its execution.

Congratulations to all the professionals who helped make this project a reality! We continue moving forward together in improving the railway infrastructure that connects and transforms our territory.

We share a summary video of the works to showcase the project’s key milestones. Don’t miss it!
