Rubau has completed a major civil engineering project at the future Maragall station, marking further progress in the development of the central section of Barcelona Metro Line 9.
The project centres around a vertical shaft measuring 26 metres in diameter and 62 metres deep, connecting street level with the lower tunnel level. Within this underground space, the initial works focused on repairing structural defects and resolving water infiltration issues, both inside the shaft and in the platform area.
Once the space had been prepared, work progressed on the station’s different levels, including the construction of the reinforced concrete platforms, preparation of the shaft base for the steel structure, and construction of the structural slabs for the concourse and roof.
The project also included the elements required to ensure the station’s ventilation, safety and evacuation, as well as pedestrian access points and drainage systems designed in accordance with universal accessibility standards.
The size of the shaft, the depth of the works and the construction of the different structural elements in an underground environment highlight the technical complexity of a project that required particularly demanding planning and coordination.
With the completion of this construction phase, the station has taken another step towards entering service. Once operational, it will improve transport connectivity in north-eastern Barcelona and across the wider metropolitan area.
To provide a closer look at the completed works, we are sharing a video that takes viewers through the infrastructure, from street level down to the tunnel, showcasing the scale of the project carried out by Rubau:
